Towards “global zero”: the role of the Holy See in the campaign on nuclear disarmament
2019
On 7 July 2017 at the UN headquarters in New York the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted, the first multilateral legally-binding instrument for nuclear disarmament negotiated in the last twenty years. The very signing of the Treaty must be seen as an extraordinary achievement because it represents a historic step in the seven decades long debate on nuclear weapons. One of the most significant achievements of the decade-long campaign is the engagement of civil society and non-state actors to such a degree that it was recognized through the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The crucial supporter of the cam…
The Holy See's Position on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems
2020
The issue of lethal autonomous weapons systems (laws) goes to the heart of the debate on new warfare technologies: States, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and civil society at large have long been discussing the acceptability of ‘autonomous killing’. The present contribution zooms in on the position held by the Holy See, exploring its content and the main arguments which support the call of a ban on such technology. Both diplomatic statements and doctrinal teachings will be tackled. Importantly, a solid argument for a prohibition of laws is based on the moral unacceptability of autonomous killing, which may assume also a legal standing through the so-called Marte…
Problem ludzkiej godności w katolickiej nauce społecznej na przykładzie myśli Franciszka Janusza Mazurka
2020
Tržní hospodářství v katolickém sociálním učení – historický přehled a sociálněetická analýza
2016
Catholic social teaching, beginning in the 19th century, aimed at nurturing and improving Christian morality in the emerging industrialized societies. However, several significant studies demonstrate that changing social structures were also responsible for the ‘social question’ of the time. Consequently bishops, such as Ketteler, fought for social reforms and a new social order. Nevertheless, the idea that free market economy could play a significant role in coordinating economic agents seemed foreign to Catholic social teaching. In this paper, I argue that today Catholic social teaching acknowledges and appreciates market economies, if and insofar as they are regulated and understood in t…
Katolicka nauka społeczna wobec zagadnień społeczno-politycznych

The crisis of values, authority and identity that affects contemporary Europe encourages the Church to act that will protect Christians from axiological and morał degradation. One of the areas that can do this through their methods is Catholic social teaching. The article is a presentation of the most important assumptions of Catholic social science and an indication of how concepts of the nation and State together with goals and rights and obligations should be implemented so that both the Citizen and the rulers can strive for the common good.
